The Beaumont School of Medical Laboratory Science was established in 1966 and has graduated more than 500 students to date. The School is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Under this accreditation, the school expanded its clinical training program offerings in response to the high demand for certified, technical staff in the clinical laboratory profession. The new program is outlined below.
- New in January 2022
- This 44-week clinical laboratory education program is designed for post-baccalaureate, non-MLS degree candidates. The inaugural class began in January 2022.
- Class Size: The 44-week program accepts 18-20 students per class.
The program consists of daily full-time interactive lecture series in the first half (approximately 21 weeks) followed by clinical laboratory rotations in the second half (approximately 22 weeks). The first week is dedicated to program Orientation.
Clinical rotations will be conducted at the Beaumont Laboratory campuses in Dearborn, Farmington, Grosse Pointe, Troy, Taylor, Trenton and Wayne. Students will spend 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, in the clinical laboratory receiving lecture,
demonstration, observation and hands-on practice at a student or live clinical bench. Under the supervision of faculty or teaching technologists, students have opportunities to work with state-of-the-art biomedical instrumentation and a diverse collection
of clinical specimens.
Students must be highly motivated, self-directed learners with strong study skills who will be able to commit to the rigorous 44-week program.
Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to apply for the Medical Laboratory Scientist certification exam offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification and seek employment in numerous clinical laboratory
disciplines.
Service work performed by students in clinical settings outside of program hours is non-compulsory.
