Psychological, emotional, and physical well-being are critical in the development of competent, caring, and resilient pediatricians and require active attention in life inside and outside of medicine. The Pediatric Residency Program promotes the professional ideals of self-care, resiliency, and the responsibility to support other colleagues and members of the health care team. Through a variety of resources and methods, the program models, teaches and nurtures these important professionalism skills and supports the well-being of our residents.

Wellness Activities

  • Fall Resident Retreat Day
  • Annual Resident Appreciation Week organized by the Pediatric Residency Program Wellness Committee
  • Pet therapy, mindfulness classes, Yoga classes, affinity groups/clubs
  • Yearly Resident Welcome Picnic, where all residents get together to welcome our new interns.
  • Our residents organize multiple activities together. They enjoy what the area has to offer. Southeast Michigan - great place to live and work

Wellness Support

  • All residents have a faculty advisor, and the program employs transitions in mentoring for an optimal experience for residents.
  • Incoming PL-1 residents are paired with PL-2 resident peer mentor.
  • On-call sleep rooms, cab vouchers to be used when residents want to avoid driving after being on call.
  • Consistent monitoring of Duty Hours
  • Fatigue lectures; AMA GME Competency Educational Modules “Thriving Through Residency: The Resilient Resident” and “Using Tools to Form an Action Plan for Wellness.”
  • All resident evaluations query fatigue, impairment
  • Resident wellness self-assessment is incorporated into the semiannual performance and progress meetings and institutional resources reviewed with residents semiannually.
  • Addition of individualized resources, reorganization of schedules, provision of time off when needed to optimize wellness
  • Two additional days off per year specifically for medical and wellness appointments. Three additional "personal" or wellness days away from work - in addition to resident vacation and conference time.
