Education

The Department of Urology conducts an ACGME approved training program, with two residents at each level, for four years following one year of preparatory graduate training prior to entering the program. 

  • that year must be spent in general surgery in a program with the four subsequent years of formal Urology
  • the program is five years in total
  • exposure to international urology with opportunities to travel and network with urologists worldwide

Mission

Our mission is to train Urologic Surgery residents to provide compassionate, extraordinary care to a diverse population. The Urology Residency Program at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares physicians to meet the demands of contemporary urologic practice in urban and suburban community and tertiary care hospitals. Residents learn to provide patient- and family-centered care, contributing to the health and well-being of patients throughout the community.

Aims

  • To prepare physicians for the practice of urology by teaching the skills, knowledge and humanistic qualities that constitute the foundations of urologic practice.
  • To responsibly diagnose, treat, manage and provide education to patients related to problems with high prevalence in the communities we serve, including prostate disease, kidney disorders and urologic pathology.
  • To provide progressive responsibility for and experience to enable effective management of clinical problems in a typical urologic practice.
  • To prepare graduates who are capable of autonomous practicing urology and provide patient and family centered care.
  • To promote lifelong learning of new skills and knowledge by teaching how to assess and interpret medical evidence in the literature and apply this knowledge to a single patient or population during their careers.
  • To develop physicians to monitor their own physical and mental well-being.
