Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship, Royal Oak

The Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship in the Department of Radiology at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is a one-year ACGME accredited program that prides itself on its commitment to offering excellent training in all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging. The program is one of only a few ACGME accredited musculoskeletal fellowships in the country. Two fellowship positions are available each year.

Comprehensive training in adult and pediatric musculoskeletal anatomy and pathology is offered, including sports medicine, bone and soft tissue tumors, trauma, arthritis and spine pathology. The fellowship offers a wide variety of exposure to musculoskeletal MRI, CT, ultrasound, radiography and imaging-guided procedures including arthrography, bone and soft tissue biopsies.

Research opportunities are available to the musculoskeletal fellow and one research project is required during the fellowship year. Time and resources are available to fund the fellow to present their research at a meeting.

There are five musculoskeletal fellowship trained faculty and two additional faculty with extensive experience covering various aspects of MSK imaging including cross-sectional imaging, radiography and arthrography. The department also has a full-time, dedicated MR physicist.

Equipment in the Department of Radiology includes two 3T MR scanners, a high field open MR scanner, several 1.5T MRI scanners, numerous multidetector CT scanners including a FLASH CT scanner, and a dedicated musculoskeletal ultrasound unit. PET and PET-CT are located in Nuclear Medicine, which is a division of the Department of Radiology. There is also a 2D/3D lab for CT image reconstruction.

The division of musculoekeletal division has excellent collaborative relationships with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery includes specialists in orthopedic oncology, spine surgery, hand surgery, shoulder surgery, joint replacement, trauma, sports medicine, foot and ankle surgery, and pediatric orthopaedics. Opportunities for collaborative research are available and encouraged.

Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital is a 1,061 bed tertiary care and university-affiliated hospital in suburban Detroit. The hospital is routinely among the top nationally in total numbers of inpatient admissions (over 55,000) and surgeries. Corewell Health/Beaumont is recognized regionally and nationally for clinical excellence including awards such as ‘100 Top Hospitals: Orthopedic Benchmarks for Success'. Coupled with its proximity to Detroit and the surrounding suburbs, the hospital draws patients from urban, suburban, and rural settings in Michigan. It is a Level One-Trauma Center.
