The sections of Automated Chemistry and Special Testing perform over 4 million tests each year. The Automated Chemistry section includes Urinalysis and a Stat Lab. The combined test menu from the two sections is extensive and includes routine chemistry panels, blood gases, endocrine tests, cardiac markers, therapeutic drug monitoring (immunoassay, HPLC, LC-MS/MS and GC), tumor markers, protein and hemoglobin electrophoresis, Hgb A1c by HPLC, toxicology (GC-MS confirmation, HPLC and GC procedures), open neural tube defect and Down Syndrome risk assessment, autoimmune disease testing, and sweat testing.
The Automated Chemistry section provides an opportunity to gain experience in a modern automated laboratory. The Special Testing section has automated instrumentation, however it also provides experience in manual procedures. Both laboratory sections serve hospital inpatients and outpatients and service a large outreach program. The Ancillary Testing staff (part of Clinical Pathology) is under the direction of the Chemistry faculty and is responsible for all point-of-care testing within the hospital. The fellow will have the opportunity to spend time with this staff during his or her training.
