Corewell Health is the new name for Beaumont.

Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship, Royal Oak

The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is a one-year program that is committed to offering an outstanding subspecialty training experience. It is expected that graduates will become active and contributing members of the orthopaedic surgery community and its various subspecialty societies. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan is a 1,100-bed tertiary care and university-affiliated hospital in suburban Detroit. The hospital is ranked second nationally in total number of inpatient admissions (over 55,000) and in number of surgeries. Beaumont is recognized regionally and nationally for clinical excellence (for example, 100 Top Hospitals: Orthopaedic Benchmarks for Success). Coupled with its proximity to Detroit and the surrounding suburbs, the hospital draws patients from urban, suburban, and rural settings throughout Michigan and the Midwest region.

The fellowship program offers exposure to all areas of operative and non-operative sports medicine including

  • arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder, knee, and elbow
  • hip and ankle arthroscopy
  • treatment of the injured athletes
  • degenerative conditions of shoulder and elbow
  • complex cartilage disorders
  • multi-ligamentous injuries of the knee

Curriculum and assignments are balanced between

  • outpatient office or clinics
  • operating rooms
  • training room

Under supervision of faculty, the fellow provides coverage to the NFL Detroit Lions, Corktown AFC, Detroit's Pro Am Women's Soccer Team, Detroit Tradesmen Rugby, and a variety of high school teams. At a minimum, one laboratory and one clinical research project are required during the fellowship year. It is expected that these projects will be presented at national meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.

One position at the sixth postgraduate year will be offered to an approved candidate who is board eligible (or board certified) in orthopaedic surgery. Our program participates in the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Match Agreement, sponsored by the AOSSM and the SFMatch. The terms of the agreement can be found on SFMatch
