Medical Student Rotations, Dearborn

Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn and Beaumont Hospital, Wayne serve as clinical campuses for Wayne State University School of Medicine third-year students.  All required and elective rotations are scheduled by the medical school.  

Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn offers elective rotations to fourth-year students from all accredited medical schools in:

Critical Care Medicine

  • introduction to the diagnosis and management of critically ill patients, including the pathophysiology and management of acute respiratory, neurologic and renal failure

General Surgery

  • provides an opportunity to gain experience with surgical procedures that are commonly performed by residents
  • communications skills and information management for safe and efficient hospital practice are emphasized

Geriatric Medicine

  • introduction to the subspecialty with exposure to care of the elderly in the hospital, long-term care facilities and ambulatory care facilities

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

  • introduction to the subspecialty with experience in the High Risk OB Clinic, ultrasound and perinatal diagnostic units

Application Guidelines

  • only two rotation applications per student will be accepted
  • applications must be submitted at least 30 days in advance
  • applications are not accepted or processed June 1 – August 1
  • elective rotations are not offered in June, July, August and December  
  • students are notified by email when rotation has been scheduled or denied
  • all rotations begin on the 1st of the month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday, then the rotation begins on the next business day
  • all electives are scheduled for four weeks and can include weekend and night assignments
  • Beaumont does not sponsor visas for medical students

Dress code

  • all students must wear white jackets
  • male students should wear a dress shirt and tie, female students should wear a professional blouse, and dress pants or skirt; denim is not allowed
  • exceptions only for services requiring scrubs

Meals

  • a meal allowance is provided if scheduled for nights on call
