Thank you for considering our program! I would like to provide you with some background information to aid your assessment. Our program has been in existence for over twenty years with records of board certified, fully competent Hematologists/Oncologists and a majority of our alumni stay locally to practice in the area.

Currently, we accept two (2) fellows per year with hope of increasing to four (4) in two years’ time (2025). Our program is fully accredited by the ACGME and the ABIM. To be eligible for consideration, fellows must have completed training in internal medicine at an ACGME accredited institution and be board eligible at the time of entering our fellowship program. Our fellowship program emphasizes clinical training as well as clinical research.

The fellowship program is built on the six core competencies:

  • Practice-based learning and improvement
  • Patient care
  • Professionalism
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Medical knowledge
  • Systems-based practice

The overall objective is to provide all the resources for fellows to master the art and science of caring for patients with cancer and blood disorders. We advance the knowledge of clinical and basic research and help develop skills for lifelong learning and continued growth in hematology-oncology following graduation from the program. Also, by participation in clinical trials, fellows will learn the standard of care for patients locally and nationally. Through translational research they will learn the application of new basic laboratory knowledge through patient care.

As one of the leading centers for cancer treatments in the state of Michigan, our program comprises of extensive clinical and research experience. By the end of fellowship, the fellow would have seen virtually every tumor type, benign and malignant hematological disorder. Our new CAR-T program provides excellent opportunity to our fellows with innovative ideas on managing complicated, refractory malignant diseases. In addition, our fellows have opportunity to fulfill bone marrow transplant rotations at Karmanos Cancer Center or Henry Ford Hospital.

We have an excellent multidisciplinary team which is important in modern cancer care. Our Radiation Oncology service is internationally recognized which offers opportunity to our fellows to participate in collaborative clinical research of scientific relevance.

Overall, we seek to train physicians in a very compassionate and caring setting. The fellows will learn the art of communication with patients and other healthcare professionals and obtain the necessary skills to control pain and care for patients at the end of their life.
