Expectations of Course Requirements and Work Quality Standards
Engaging in a unit of CPE at Beaumont requires a major commitment of time and learning. Therefore, intending participants should be clear about their ability to fulfill expectations before making a commitment. While the ACPE minimum standard for credit for a CPE unit is 400 hours, a unit at Beaumont will consist of a total time commitment of approximately 480 hours spent in clinical practicums, group-centered learning activities, and one-to-one direct supervision. Students also have the opportunity and responsibility for periods of overnight clinical duty, shared holiday clinical duty, and shared or full leadership of weekly religious services.
The commitment to CPE patterns the delivery of spiritual care in a Level I Trauma Center. CPE participants receive training alongside an interdisciplinary team of caregivers. This includes times when a higher volume of pastoral opportunities may become available (e.g., weekends and holidays).
In order to avoid any misunderstandings and possible disappointments, course requirements and expectations are expressed below. These will be adhered to in order to maintain the Beaumont CPE standards.
- The expectations for acceptable participation in this educational process include a high standard of reliability, as evidenced by regular and punctual attendance. Commitment to the group journey, its creativity, and its identity are important facets of this. It is, therefore, inappropriate to expect accommodation of lateness or frequent requests for time off. They handicap both individual learning and the group process. Irregularity in the fulfillment of clinical assignments is also unacceptable.
- Chaplain residents and the chaplain interns in extended units: eight (8) satisfactory verbatim reports per unit of CPE per unit of CPE.
- Chaplain residents and the chaplain interns in extended units: the reading of three (three) books on pastoral/spiritual care; ten (10) articles on approved, related subject matter may be substituted for one (1) book.
- Chaplain residents: a weekly commitment of a minimum of 40 hours in direct pastoral care to patients, clients, residents, families, and staff, which includes evenings and weekend shifts as assigned. The remainder of the time is devoted to seminars, supervision, study, etc.; and attendance at and participation in weekly (residents) or daily (summer students) didactic sessions, which are not included in the 40-hour clinical commitment. Requests for flexible scheduling will be considered in emergent situations.
- Chaplain interns in 30-week extended units: a weekly commitment of a minimum of 16 hours in direct pastoral care to patients, clients, families, and staff in regularly scheduled two-week rotations.
- Chaplain interns in the 20-week extended unit: a weekly commitment of a minimum of 24 hours in direct pastoral care to patients, clients, families, and staff in regularly scheduled two-week rotations.
- Logging pastoral care interventions (visits) on the computerized charting system(s) in a timely fashion. Visits effected with staff are to be recorded on the reporting sheets (available on all departmental computers) and submitted weekly to the administrative office staff.
- Chaplain interns in intensive units (summer): eight (8) satisfactory verbatim reports and three (3) virtual verbatims (ministry to a peer).
(A satisfactory verbatim is one containing appropriate educational dynamics in the delivery of pastoral care, and addressing one or more learning issues of the intern. It will also include thoughtful review of the caregiving process in the Reflection and Evaluation Section.) Credit for the equivalent of more than one verbatim may be granted only at the discretion of the individual supervisor. In such cases, the work submitted must contain clear evidence of outstanding work, or constitute a Process Report illustrating significant tracking of spiritual care and addressing the intern’s learning in relation to one or more of the Objectives of CPE. Process Reports must contain a Reflection and Evaluation of the entire process.
- Chaplain interns in intensive units: the reading of two (2) books on pastoral/spiritual care; six (6) articles on approved, related subject matter may be substituted for one (1) book.
- Chaplain interns in intensive units: a weekly commitment of a minimum of 32 hours in direct pastoral care to patients, clients, residents, families, and staff, which includes evenings and weekend shifts as assigned. The remainder of the time is devoted to seminars, supervision, study, etc.; and attendance at and participation in weekly (residents) or daily (summer students) didactic sessions, which are not included in the 32-hour clinical commitment. Requests for flexible scheduling will be considered in emergent situations.
Chaplain interns and residents will be expected to demonstrate coherent understanding of the chosen reading material in individual supervisory sessions.
A number of books as well as journals identified as recommended reading are held at the Beaumont Health System, Royal Oak medical library.
CPE Chaplain Resident and Intern Work Quality Standards
- Attendance at scheduled didactics:
- Chaplain residents: Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Chaplain interns in 30-week extended unit: Mondays from 10 a.m.
Chaplain interns in 20-week extended unit: Mondays from 10 a.m.
Chaplain interns in 10-week intensive unit: Two weekdays from 10 a.m.
- Doing pastoral visits on clinical assignments during open time blocks, i.e. when not in didactic or supervised group activities.
- Being intentional about consulting/coordinating with the CPE chaplain staff and other chaplain interns/residents for unit coverage, referrals, and pastoral needs, etc. This may be done via telephone if there is no opportunity for face-to-face meetings.
- Being diligent concerning the learning opportunities offered by daytime clinical duty, up to fourteen (14) night shift duty assignments, some early morning, weekend, and evening clinical rotations, and up to two federally-recognized public holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day). Night shift orientation held during the first week of the unit begins at 10 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m. After the night shift orientation, chaplain intern and resident night duty begins at 10 p.m. and ends at 6:30 a.m.; holiday coverage typically includes serving as chaplain for six to eight hours within a 32- to 36-hour time span. Be sure to pass on sacramental requests, referrals, and the trauma pager in person before signing off.
- Chaplain interns in the 10-week intensive unit: unless a chaplain intern has fulfilled a night duty assignment ending at 6:30 a.m. on that day, the normal daily quitting time is 6:30 p.m. as listed on the daily schedule. The chaplain intern scheduled for a late (5 to 10:30 p.m.) duty assignment or coming off a night duty assignment will fulfill normal coverage of his/her assigned unit(s) until noon, unless other arrangements for coverage have been made, in writing, and agreed to by his/her supervisor. The chaplain intern scheduled for an overnight duty assignment starting at 10 p.m. or for an early morning shift (6 to 10a.m.) the next day will fulfill normal coverage of his/her assigned unit(s) until 3p.m., unless other arrangements for coverage have been made, in writing and agreed to by his/her supervisor.
- Responsibility for planning and leading public worship in the Beaumont, Royal Oak Spiritual Care Center (or at the clinical placement institution or facility) in rotation with department staff.
- Completing the corporate and department mandatory education online modules no later than two weeks after the start of the unit. The mandatory learning modules are accessible from the Beaumont Student Center at the Inside Beaumont Online website.
NOTE: All written work (including evaluations) must be submitted in satisfactoroy form and on time. Late or unsatisfactory work and/or unfulfilled clinical duty-required hours will result in partial unit credit only, and/or being dropped from the Beaumont CPE program.
