Hematopathology Fellowship, Royal Oak

Scope of Services

Beaumont is committed to the health and wellness of all residents and fellows.  Our Director of Physician Wellness works with residents and fellows to address their needs for continued well-being through support, education, resource development, and preventive programming.

The department of Clinical Pathology is located on the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak campus and occupies more than 50,000 square feet and is staffed by 10 clinical pathologists (5 of whom are hematopathologist) and 5 Ph.Ds. There are 10 separate divisions in Clinical Pathology including

  • automated chemistry
  • ancillary testing/point of care
  • coagulation
  • flow cytometry
  • hematology
  • microbiology
  • molecular pathology
  • send outs
  • special testing and transfusion medicine
  • transfusion medicine

A total of 8,000,000 in-house laboratory procedures were performed in Royal Oak Laboratories in 2016. The Hematology and Coagulation Laboratories performed over 1 million procedures during this period and the hematopathologists signed out 822 bone marrows, over 3380 flow cytometry evaluations and 3042 pathology consults.

The department is well-equipped with high-tech automated instrumentation, photomicroscopy and video conferencing capabilities and is supported by up-to-date dedicated computer systems. Additional diagnostic laboratories supporting this training program include the Molecular Pathology and Clinical Cytogenomics Laboratories both of which offer advanced technology.
