The Joint Commission has established National Patient Safety Goals that promote targeted improvements in patient safety. The goals focus on system wide mechanisms designed to improve some of the most problematic areas in health care.

Beaumont Health System supports the Joint Commission's Goals and many areas are implementing specific procedures to help improve patient safety through such measures of:

• the accuracy of patient identification
• the accuracy of surgical site identification
• communications among caregivers
• infection rates
• medication safety
• infusion pump safety
