Leapfrog Program

Beaumont is an active participant in Leapfrog Group, a consortium of more than 170 public and private health care institutions that collects data from participating hospitals and issues rankings based on safety and quality standards. Leapfrog supports the adoption of three patient safety standards, proven to enhance patient care outcomes, to reduce medical mistakes in hospitals, including:

  • Computerized physician order entry: all physician orders must be computerized
  • Evidence-based hospital referral: for certain elective procedures, patients should be referred to hospitals more likely to produce better outcomes
  • ICU physician staffing: hospital intensive care units should be managed by a physician certified in critical care medicine.

In 2006, Beaumont Health System achieved the two highest safe practices scores, indicating the hospitals either fully implemented or made good progress toward implementing Leapfrog's recommended quality and safety leap.
