On Saturday, March 29, Safety City U.S.A. is offering area residents "Bicycle Helmet Fittings." Safety City U.S.A. staff, comprised of nurses, firefighters and police officers, will teach bicycle helmet fitting to children and adults at no charge. The event begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. Safety City U.S.A. is in the Northwood Shopping Center, at 30955 N. Woodward Ave. (at 13 Mile Road), Royal Oak.
"There's no doubt, bicycle helmets not only prevent injuries, but save lives, " says Donna Bucciarelli, R.N., trauma prevention coordinator, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and program manager, Safety City U.S.A. "It's not only important that you wear a helmet when cycling, but that it fits properly. It also applies to scooters, skateboarding and inline skating. We encourage parents and children to bring their helmets to Safety City U.S.A. and our staff will teach how to fit their protective headgear before hitting the road or trail."
According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, Bicycle helmet use is the single most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities resulting from crashes. Head injuries cause approximately 75 percent of the bicycle deaths each year.
For more information on the bicycle helmet fitting, call Safety City U.S.A. at 248-551-0100.
Safety City U.S.A. is Michigan's first and only year-round nonprofit injury prevention center. Its programs are dedicated to instructing children, teens, adults and seniors in safety education. Safety City U.S.A. is a collaboration of Beaumont Hospital and the Royal Oak Fire and Police departments.
