Community invited to bring in old thermometers, medical sharps

On Friday, Sept. 12, Beaumont Medical Center, Macomb Township invites area residents to bring in mercury thermometers and medical sharps. These items, found in many households, can be hazardous to people in the community.

Those interested in bringing items for the mercury and sharps recovery day should:

  • Place mercury thermometers, thermostats, gauges or switches in a zip-style plastic bag, wrapped in a paper towel. Loose mercury not contained in a device will not be accepted.
  • Place medical sharps- syringes, needles and lancets- in rigid, durable containers with lids, such as coffee cans or detergent bottles. Having secure lids on the containers will help prevent any possible puncture wounds to workers. Loose needles, syringes and lancets will not be accepted.

The collection of household medical hazards will take place in the parking lot of Beaumont Medical Center, Macomb Township, 15979 Hall Road, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Enter from Hall Road/M-59. There is no fee for dropping off medical sharps and mercury thermometers.
