Beaumont’s Safety City U.S.A. hosts ‘Celebrate My Drive’ Oct. 19 at Northwood Shopping Center

A driver's license brings new joy and freedom, but for teens nationwide the first year behind the wheel can be deadly too. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among U.S. teenagers. To better educate young drivers about being responsible and safety-conscious, Beaumont Health System's Safety City U.S.A. and State Farm are hosting "Celebrate My Drive" on Saturday, from at in Royal Oak.

Safety City U.S.A. is inviting area teens ages 14-19 to attend the one-day awareness event. There is no fee to attend, however all participants are asked to sign-in at Safety City U.S.A. in the Northwood Shopping Center parking lot, 30955 N. Woodward.

Says Erica Surman, RN, pediatric trauma program manager, Beaumont Children's Hospital, "Getting a driver's license gives teens greater independence, but with that privilege comes increased responsibility. We're pleased to again offer State Farm's nationwide Celebrate My Drive program. We'll have a driving simulator on site to offer teens a hands-on experience that demonstrates how texting and driving or driving under the influence of alcohol can have deadly results. We also have plenty of activities planned outside in the parking lot.

The event will feature:

  • driving distraction awareness
  • impaired driving simulation
  • blind spot demo
  • giveaways
  • refreshments
