Ananias Diokno, M.D., chief medical officer of Beaumont Health System, has announced the appointment of Terry Kowalenko, M.D., of Brighton, Mich., as health system chair, Emergency Medicine, effective June 1.
"Dr. Kowalenko brings to Beaumont am impressive array of clinical, administrative, research and teaching skills," says Dr. Diokno.
Dr. Kowalenko joins Beaumont from the University of Michigan Health System, where he served as director of Continuous Professional Development for the University of Michigan Medical School. He also held a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan Medical School as clinical professor, Department of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education.
His earlier responsibilities have included: program director, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Michigan/St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; and program director, Department of Emergency Medicine, DMC/Sinai-Grace Hospital. He also served as an attending physician in Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital.
An active researcher, Dr. Kowalenko has focused his interests on hemorrhagic shock, cardiovascular disease, education, international emergency medicine and workplace violence.
Dr. Kowalenko received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and did his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
He has served on dozens of professional committees at the state, national and international level. He is currently a board member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has made more than 100 presentations nationwide and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and other professional publications, as well as book chapters and abstracts on topics related to emergency medicine.
Dr. Kowalenko has received numerous awards, including the 2012 Distinguished Educator Award of the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academy for Scholarship and the 2011 Ronald L. Krome, M.D., Meritorious Service Award of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians. The MCEP award is named for Dr. Krome, former chief of emergency medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
