If you are ready to get up and go after a long, hard Michigan winter, Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe has a program that can help.
"Walk with Spirit," sponsored by Beaumont's Spirit of Women program, the Beaumont Community Health Coalition and Shore Pointe Nursing Center, is a six-week walking program to help set and maintain walking goals. Walkers submitting weekly mileage records have a chance to win weekly prizes, as well as a grand prize for those completing the program.
A "Walk with Spirit" kickoff event will be held Monday, April 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Beaumont Bon Brae Center, 22300 Bon Brae (at Jefferson Avenue, between 10 and 11 Mile) in St. Clair Shores and Tuesday, April 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Neighborhood Club, 17150 Waterloo in Grosse Pointe. The $10 registration includes a T-shirt, pedometer and mileage pocket planner that can be picked up at the kickoff event. Walkers may register online at https://classes.beaumont.edu/, by calling 800-633-7377 or in person at the kickoff event.
"Walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise. It makes you healthier, feel younger and gives you more energy," says Peggy Murphy Kurza, coordinator, Community Health and Outreach at the Beaumont Bon Brae Center. "Regular walkers have fewer heart attacks and strokes, and have lower blood pressure. Staying active can add minutes to your life and help reduce stress and anxiety."
Participants may walk alone or in groups with family, friends and neighbors. Pre-measured walking routes will be provided.
Beaumont health professionals will be available throughout the program to offer tips and keep the momentum going.
Those interested in leading a walking group should call Peggy Kurza at 586-779-7660.
