Bariatric surgery program - highest accreditation

6/27/2007

The American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network recently named Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak a Level 1a Accredited Bariatric Center. There are currently just 35 hospitals in the nation with Level 1 accreditation. Beaumont is the second in Michigan.

With Level 1a accreditation - the highest conferred by the ACS - patients from the region seeking bariatric (weight-loss) surgery can be assured that Beaumont has the medical personnel, equipment and systems devoted to these types of procedures. Hospitals with this accreditation perform a high number of cases, including the most challenging and complex, and achieve safe and effective outcomes, according to the ACS. The accreditation includes sharing the results of Beaumont's bariatric surgery program with other accredited hospitals, leading to safer, more effective outcomes for patients across the country.

The accreditation is for three years, and is renewable.

"We are positioned to provide national leadership in this specialty as a result of our outstanding interdisciplinary team of experienced surgeons, dedicated physicians and committed allied health professionals," says Charles J. Shanley, M.D., senior vice president and chairman of Surgical Services.

Beaumont offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary bariatric medicine program, including free introductory seminars at its Weight Control Center and the Club Bariatrix monthly support group that focuses on behavioral and nutritional weight management topics. The program is made up of registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, psychologists, nurses and physicians who help patients with the overall psychological and lifestyle changes necessary to lose pounds and maintain a healthy weight.

The hospital offers the latest minimally invasive procedures in weight loss surgery, including the Roux-en-Y and Lap-Band. procedures. Surgeons at Beaumont, Royal Oak performed more than 500 of these surgeries in the last two years.
