Safety City U.S.A., the first nonprofit, injury prevention/safety education center in Michigan, is hosting a summer day camp program for children ages 5 to 12. Four one-week camp sessions are available during July and August. The morning program (8 a.m. - noon) is geared to children ages 5 to 8; and the afternoon program (1 p.m. - 5 p.m.) is for children ages 9 to 12. Each session is $110 per camper. The camp fee includes all activities and a daily snack.
Camp programs will include fire, home, water, traffic and bike safety. A "police day" will address stranger danger, Internet safety and bullying. All activities are led by fire and police personnel from Royal Oak, as well as health care professionals from Beaumont Hospital and trained volunteers.

"The focus of our summer camp program is on safety education. We've got a great facility to make learning fun and interactive for kids, including our smoke simulator to teach fire safety," says Holly Bair, R.N., Trauma Program Manager, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. "We welcome children from all over Southeast Michigan."
Safety City U.S.A.'s smoke simulator teaches children about fire safety.
The year-round, safety center in Royal Oak is a collaborative effort of Beaumont Hospital and the Royal Oak Fire and Police departments. The emphasis is on "hands-on" safety education to reduce injuries and save lives lost to injuries.
While most of the safety education activities at Safety City U.S.A. are aimed at school children ages 5 to 12, afternoon and evening programs are also offered to teens, parents and seniors living in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
According to the National Safety Council, preventable injuries send 27 million Americans to hospital emergency centers each year. Unintentional injury remains the number one killer of children ages 1 to 14 in the United States.
