Intuitive Surgical, maker of the da Vinci® surgical robot, has selected Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak to be a Multi-specialty Training Center for Robotic Surgery. Beaumont joins just a handful of centers in the world teaching how to use the sophisticated equipment.
Beaumont's surgical expertise, two fully equipped operating rooms in the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Surgical Learning Center and acquisition of its third da Vinci® Surgical System (the latest "S" model), make it uniquely positioned to provide training to surgeons and surgical teams. Surgeons at Beaumont have been using the original model da Vinci® robot since 2002, and to date have performed almost 650 robotic operations. Beaumont physicians use the robot for lung, urologic and heart surgeries.
"This is an unparalleled opportunity to use the unique resources of our Surgical Learning Center to teach surgeons from multiple surgical specialties," says Charles Shanley, M.D., vice president of Surgical Services and chairman of the department of Surgery at the Royal Oak hospital. "Being selected as a training center for robotic surgery is further evidence of Beaumont's leadership role in surgical technology, education and research."
The $1-million da Vinci® Surgical System allows surgeons to perform operations from a remote console, with robotic instruments inserted via small incisions. The robot translates a doctor's hand movement into corresponding micromovements of the instrument. The benefits of minimally invasive robotic surgery include reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection and less pain with faster recovery.
There are currently 14 active Training Centers in the United States and two in Europe, as designated by California-based Intuitive. Beaumont is one of three offering training on the latest "S" model robot.
Surgeons at Beaumont, Royal Oak performed 54,450 surgeries in 2006. The hospital is second in the nation and No. 1 in Michigan for surgical volume based on 2004 rankings, the latest available from the American Hospital Association. The hospital offers a full range of surgical services, from general surgery to 13 subspecialties, including: bariatric surgery, cardiovascular surgery; neurosurgery; ophthalmologic surgery; oral and maxillofacial surgery; orthopedic surgery; otolaryngology; pediatric surgery; peripheral vascular surgery; plastic surgery; thoracic surgery; trauma surgery; and urologic surgery.
