Beaumont opens premier surgical specialty center for children

1/17/2007

Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak - the largest provider of pediatric surgery in a five-county region - has opened the Ghesquiere Family Center for Children's Surgery, a surgical specialty center designed specifically for children.

The center offers the most advanced technology, minimally invasive surgical procedures and a highly trained children's surgery team, including dedicated pediatric nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists in an atmosphere designed to surprise and delight children. Specialties represented at the $5.2-million, 16,000-square-foot Ghesquiere (GUESS-choir) Family Center for Children's Surgery include general surgery; ear, nose and throat; ophthalmology; orthopedics; and urology. The facility includes a waiting room, semi-private preoperative rooms, five procedure rooms and a post-anesthesia care unit.

"Parents entrust their little ones to us for the best possible care," says Robert S. Morden, M.D., director of pediatric surgery for Beaumont Hospitals. "We can assure them of the best care medicine has to offer in a setting that is designed just for children."

The new center helps to reduce the anxiety of children who are about to undergo surgery with features such as a "river" floor, twinkling "stars" in the ceiling; red wagons instead of wheelchairs to transport patients; a video wall with kid-friendly images; portable DVD players; fanciful frames around doorways to semi-private preoperative rooms; a paint color palette of light, bright colors; and original artwork provided by students from the Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School in Bloomfield Hills.

The Ghesquiere family's gift of $1 million has helped create a premier surgical specialty center to serve children in Beaumont's community. Auto dealer executive Charles J. Ghesquiere Jr. of Bloomfield Hills has been on Beaumont's Board of Directors since 2000.
