$5 MILLION GIFT TO NAME NEW PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY CENTER AT BEAUMONT HOSPITAL, ROYAL OAK
Suzanne and Herbert Tyner have pledged a $5 million gift to establish the Suzanne and Herbert Tyner Pediatric Emergency Center at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. The Pediatric Emergency Center, one of the first of its kind in the country, will be part of the North Pavilion expansion project at the hospital that includes a new 88,000 square-foot Emergency Center.
"We are grateful for this extraordinary gift from Suzanne and Herbert Tyner," says Margaret Casey, president of The Beaumont Foundation. "Their gift is particularly appreciated in these times of financial uncertainty. With the generosity of our community partners such as the Tyners, Beaumont will continue to provide the highest quality health care to our patients and their families."
According to statistics from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, more than 29 million children visit emergency centers each year. However, only about 6 percent of hospitals in the United States are equipped with the pediatric equipment and supplies deemed essential by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The generous gift by Suzanne and Herbert Tyner will enable Beaumont to set a new standard of care in using instruments, supplies and equipment that are age- and size-appropriate in an environment that's designed with the special needs of children in mind.
The Suzanne and Herbert Tyner Pediatric Emergency Center will be a separate area offering privacy, security and child- and family-centered care. The area will be visually appealing to children to comfort them during their visit, while at the same time equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Comfort care aides and patient representatives will be on duty around-the-clock to assist families by serving as communication liaisons with physicians and other caregivers and providing support to families.
"Beaumont has 36 board-certified emergency physicians, and 60 R.N.s who specialize in the emergency care of children," says Jedd Roe, M.D., medical director of Emergency Medicine at Beaumont, Royal Oak. "With the most talented doctors, nurses and technicians in emergency medicine today, the next step is to provide them with the best equipped facility. The exceptional gift made by Suzanne and Herbert Tyner will enable us to make this powerful combination a reality and offer superior treatment for the children who depend on us in the time of an emergency."
The Tyners, of Bloomfield Hills, have been long-time supporters of Beaumont Hospitals. This gift is a continuation of their dedication to children's issues which began with their gift to name Temple Israel's religious school in honor of their parents David and Jean Tyner. The Tyner Religious School is the largest Jewish religious school in the country. Herbert Tyner is a trustee of Beaumont Hospitals and has served on the boards of other private and charitable organizations including Meadowbrook Insurance Company and the Pistons Palace Foundation. He is president of Hartman & Tyner Inc., a Southfield-based corporation that is the largest apartment owner and developer in Southeast Michigan. His other business interests include gaming enterprises, shopping centers and commercial buildings across the United States.
Suzanne Tyner, the mother of four children and grandmother to eight, has always had a passion for helping children. With an elementary education degree from the University of Michigan, her dream has always been to support children in realizing their full potential.
She serves as a trustee of the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit and a member of the Lion of Judah, part of the women's department of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
The Tyners are members of Temple Israel and the Quarter Century Club, a designation for those who have supported the Jewish Federation's annual campaign for 25 years or more.
"We are truly excited to have this opportunity to provide an environment that comforts children who come to the Emergency department sick and scared. This new center will be an exceptional facility," says Suzanne Tyner.
Beaumont's 1,061-bed hospital in Royal Oak is a major academic, research and referral center with Level 1 trauma designation. It ranks first in the United States for inpatient admissions and second for surgical volume. Beaumont, Royal Oak is named in eight medical specialties on U.S. News & World Report's 2008 "America's Best Hospitals" lists. Visit Beaumont's web site at http://www.beaumonthospitals.com/.
