BEAUMONT RECOGNIZES COOPER GIFT
Beaumont Hospitals is honoring Susan E. Cooper of Birmingham today for a generous $5 million gift to establish a Women’s Urology Center at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. The center is the first of its kind in the Midwest dedicated exclusively to treatment and research of urological conditions such as incontinence, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.
Nearly 200 guests, including hospital, physician and community leaders, will gather this evening, May 5, to recognize Cooper at a reception that features tours of the new center.
“Since opening the center in March, we have had an incredible response from patients wanting to schedule appointments in the center. This demonstrates the desire on the part of women to have a dedicated center, staffed with clinicians specifically trained in female urologic issues. The feedback we have received has been extremely positive,” says Kenneth M. Peters, M.D., chairman of Urology at Beaumont, Royal Oak. “We owe Susan Cooper an enormous debt of gratitude.”

“The intent of my gift is to create another important women’s health destination at Beaumont. The Women’s Urology Center expands the range of female health care services provided by Beaumont Hospitals. I am gratified to provide such a center for women,” noted Susan Cooper.
In acknowledging Cooper’s generosity, Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Foundation, stated, “Tonight, we are honoring Susan Cooper for her generous spirit and for her understanding of how critical philanthropy is to the future of not-for-profit organizations such as Beaumont. We are deeply grateful to her for this exceptional gift and the way it will transform female urological care.”
Ms. Cooper has served for nearly 20 years on the Beaumont Hospitals and Foundation boards of directors and is a member of Beaumont’s Campaign Executive Committee. In addition to Beaumont, she has given generously to numerous organizations in the community both as a board member and philanthropist. She has served on the boards of Detroit Public Television, Lighthouse of Oakland County, the Cranbrook Institute of Science and, most recently, the Erb Family Foundation. Her many awards include Lighthouse of Oakland County’s Lighthouse Keepers Award (2001); and the Cranbrook Educational Community’s President’s Award (2004). In 2009, she was honored by Lighthouse PATH with the “Salute America Award” for her tireless commitment to Lighthouse and many other worthy causes in metropolitan Detroit.
The Women’s Urology Center at Beaumont is staffed by board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians and a nurse practitioner who specialize in women’s urologic conditions and offers a range of therapies, including pelvic floor physical therapy; comprehensive integrative medicine services; psychological support and access to clinical research trials evaluating new treatment options.
In addition to services available in the Women’s Urology Center, Beaumont urologists offer endoscopic, robotic and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical options as well as traditional surgeries; treatment for kidney stones; urologic cancer; prostate conditions; male infertility; voiding dysfunction; and erectile dysfunction.
