Beaumont Hospital, Troy offers a twelve month American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited PGY-1 Residency for up to two residency candidates. The program starts in July and ends in June.
The goals of the residency program are to train pharmacists to develop the skills necessary to ensure optimal delivery of drug therapy to all patients, and to analyze and disseminate drug information to health care professionals and patients. Other goals are for residents to investigate therapeutic problems in a scientific manner, enhance their verbal and written communication skills, and to become leaders in the medication use process.
The residency program is divided into four to six week experiences, with the first rotation devoted to orientation in our distributive and clinical pharmacy services. An individualized training plan is created for each resident. All residents must complete a research project and present their study results at the Great Lakes Residency Conference in the spring.
The purpose of the program is to develop pharmacist clinicians who are prepared for patient care positions within a health-system. During the residency training year, the resident will develop not only functional job skills but direct patient care skills, including but not limited to drug therapy monitoring, pharmacokinetic dosing, anticoagulant dosing and monitoring, antibiotic monitoring, renal dose modification, disease management, nutrition support, and provision of drug information. Residents will have the opportunity to interact with patients, healthcare professionals and administrators. Residents will also have the opportunity to provide education to patients, pharmacists and other health care professionals. Beaumont's program stresses active participation by the resident.
PGY-1 Residents at Beaumont, Troy will be required to complete 12 months of 4-6 week clinical and non-patient care rotations in addition to the following longitudinal and professional meeting attendance requirements:
Residents will have all reasonable expenses reimbursed for the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Meeting.
The anticipated salary for incoming residents is approximately $43,000 per year.
Resident will accrue Combined Time Off (CTO) time throughout the year. Residents will use this time for attendance at all professional meetings. Additional scheduled CTO days may be requested.
