Individual Treatment Sessions
Individual treatment sessions are conducted by a certified, licensed SLP at a frequency of 2 - 5 times weekly depending on the needs of the individual, the referral from the doctor and the insurance guidelines.
Home programs are developed with the individual and for the individual to practice their skills in order to further progress beyond the treatment sessions. The home program may consist of exercises, use of workbooks and worksheets and/or computer programs. Home programs are reviewed as needed throughout the treatment program.
Treatment materials include products from Brubaker Books and Parrot Software.
Post Treatment Communication Program
A program for individuals who have been through the initial treatment phase and are looking for additional activities and compensations to maintain and improve speech, language, and cognitive communication skills. Private pay options are available.
Group Programs are part of the treatment program or a next step after discharge. Groups average 5-8 individuals and meet weekly at the Center for Adult Communication Disorders, Beaumont Health Center, Royal Oak. Ask your SLP which group is right for you. Some individuals may need to complete a Communication Screening before entering a group. Private pay options are available.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
AAC is for individuals who need alternative ways to communicate when talking is not functional. A SLP works with the individual and family along with a communication device specialist to determine the appropriate device, secure insurance payment if able and train the individual on the use of the device.
These evaluations use standardized methods to help determine an individual's strengths and weaknesses and where they stand in relation to other adults who have had brain injuries. Looking at the total picture also helps speech and language pathologists prepare an individualized treatment program to maximize each person's abilities and to document improvements over time.
