Traumatic Brain Injury

When an accident results in a head injury, treatment often begins at one of Beaumont's Emergency Departments. Our EDs offer state-of-the-art imaging and advanced telemetry for fast, accurate diagnosis of brain injuries. The Royal Oak ED is certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center and receives trauma transfers that need advanced care from hospitals across the state of Michigan.

Research has shown that prompt, aggressive treatment of brain injuries is key to the best long-term outcomes. At Beaumont, our multidisciplinary team, including ED staff, trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons and rehabilitation specialists, work together to begin immediate treatment. Planning for recovery begins within 24 to 48 hours of the patient's admission to ensure the best outcome.

Rehabilitation specialists assess patients to learn about their lifestyle before the injury, with the goal of returning them to their pre-injury condition as soon as possible.

Care often is initially handled in our neuro ICU areas, which feature state-of-the-art real-time intracranial pressure monitoring.

Beaumont is also conducting several research projects, including investigating the chemical changes in spinal fluid after a traumatic brain injury. We are also partnering with the U.S. Department of Defense to study the injury mechanisms of TBI with the goal of improve treatments.
