Beaumont has interdisciplinary rehabilitation units in the Royal Oak and Troy hospitals.
They differ substantially from most other hospital environments. As a patient, you won't spend your days in bed or in a room. You won't even wear a hospital gown. You will be involved in your care and rehabilitation as you attend various treatment and therapeutic sessions.
Your overall care on the unit is coordinated by a physiatrist (a physician who specializes in physical medicine) and rehabilitation nurse. Members of the rehabilitation team include:
Your speech and language pathologist will assess your speech, language, voice, cognitive and swallowing problems and establish a treatment plan with individualized goals.
Individual speech-language pathologist sessions are scheduled 1 - 2 times daily including weekends and holidays. You and your family's education is a major focus of the rehabilitation unit. Specialized books and video tapes are made available so you can better understand your speech, language, cognitive and swallowing difficulties and the treatment involved.
After discharge, you may continue your treatment as an outpatient at one of Beaumont’s outpatient rehabilitation programs in Royal Oak, Troy or Grosse Pointe.
