Harry Herkowitz, M.D., System Physician Leader, Orthopedics

Harry N. Herkowitz, M.D., served as the chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak from 1991-2013. In addition, Dr. Herkowitz was system physician leader of Beaumont Health System's Orthopedics Center of Excellence. He was also a professor and chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

He specialized in the surgical management of spinal disorders including spinal stenosis, herniated discs, deformity and trauma to the neck and back. His research interests included degenerative solutions to aging discs and improving spinal implants.

A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Herkowitz completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Beaumont. He then did a Spine Surgery Fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Herkowitz authored several textbooks and hundreds of research articles concerning spine surgery. He was a highly sought-after national speaker on spine surgery topics.

Dr. Herkowitz was a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, North American Spine Society, Michigan Orthopaedic Society, Mid-American Orthopaedic Association, American Orthopaedic Association, the Spine Study Group and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was also a former president of the Cervical Spine Research Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Herkowitz passed away June 7.
