Psychiatry Residency

Mission

Our mission is to train residents to provide compassionate, extraordinary care to a diverse population. The Psychiatry Residency Program is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience that prepares physicians to meet the demands of contemporary psychiatry practice in urban and suburban community hospitals, community mental health clinics, and a variety of ambulatory settings. Our approach to mental disorders, including developmental disabilities, trauma-related disorders, and substance use disorders, includes an appropriate balance emphasizing both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. Our program places strong emphases on the value of evidence-based medicine and biopsychosocial psychiatry. Residents learn to provide patient- and family-centered care, contributing to the health and well-being of patients throughout the community. We attempt to retain our graduates to continue serving our community as clinicians and educators who make meaningful contributions to their community and the field of psychiatry.

Aims

  • To prepare physicians for the practice of psychiatry by teaching the skills, knowledge and humanistic qualities that constitute the foundations of psychiatric practice.
  • To foster the development of outstanding biopsychosocial psychiatrists by providing a diverse array of educational experiences with multidisciplinary faculty that impart clinical skills and knowledge related to psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, psychological development, neuroscience, and medical ethics.
  • To responsibly diagnose, treat, manage and provide education to patients related to problems of high prevalence in the communities we serve, including depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, substance use, and developmental disabilities. • To provide progressive responsibility for and experience to enable effective management of clinical problems in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • To prepare graduates who are capable of autonomously practicing psychiatry, providing patient- and family-centered care, and who become responsible and responsive physicians who are willing to take an active role in the challenges that lie ahead.
  • To promote lifelong learning of new skills and knowledge by teaching how to assess and interpret medical evidence in the literature, and apply it to a single patient or populations during their careers.
  • To prepare psychiatrists to become leaders in this field and carry on the education and teaching to the next generation.
  • To develop physicians to monitor their own physical and mental well-being.
