How many positions does your program offer?

There are three positions available each year. 

Do you accept foreign medical graduates?

Yes.

Are visiting elective rotations available?

Yes, a two-week elective is available that includes opportunities to see patients in clinic as well as observe surgery in the operating rooms at Beaumont Royal Oak.

Is an elective rotation necessary for strong consideration as an applicant?

No.

How many letters of recommendation are needed to apply?

Three letters of recommendation are required in addition to the Dean’s letter. 

What are your minimum scores for USMLE Step 1 & 2?

We do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement. Only the USMLE Step 1 score is required at the time of application. The USMLE Step 2 score must be submitted prior to starting residency. 

Are residents required to do research?

Yes. Residents are required to participate in at least one research project during their three years. See our Research tab for more information.

What are the didactic sessions like?

We have lectures three to four times a week in all subspecialties. Grand rounds are held once monthly. We have microsurgical courses and workshops that run throughout the year. See our Curriculum tab for more information. 

Do residents at your program work with medical students? 

Yes, Beaumont Hospital is affiliated with Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Residents routinely work with rotating medical students.

What is it like to live in Royal Oak? 

Royal Oak is a suburban municipality in the greater Detroit area. Residents find it to be a safe, enjoyable, and family-friendly suburban area with affordable cost of living and easy access to Detroit and Ann Arbor. Public transportation is available, but residents generally prefer to have a car. Ample free parking is available at the hospital. See our About the Area tab for more information.
