Round 4: surgeons reconstruct West Michigan girl’s nose and lip
Four down, one to go. Surgeons from Beaumont’s Ian Jackson Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Clinic have completed their fourth phase of reconstructing the nose and upper lip of 10-year-old Charlotte Ponce of Spring Lake.
Her nose, lip and ear were severely disfigured by a raccoon when she was an infant.
The surgery was led by Kongkrit Chaiyasate, M.D., director, Reconstructive Microsurgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. When asked how things are going, he says, "I am very pleased with Charlotte's results. Things are going as planned."
In the fourth surgery, Dr. Chaiyasate explained he and his team worked on the tip of Charlotte's nose. They also completed her lip reconstruction. "She now has a complete top lip."
He also added, "In about two weeks she'll return to Beaumont Children’s Hospital and I'll complete nasal reconstruction." That includes work on her nasal bridge. He will also transfer fat from her stomach to her cheek. The injection of fat will give her a fuller cheek. Dr. Chaiyasate says the procedure is like a graft and will result in a "chubby cheek."
After the fifth surgery, Nov. 30, Charlotte will be seen in Dr. Chaiyasate's office for monthly follow-ups. She will probably need some additional minor revisions. The next big surgery, 10-12 months from now, will focus on her missing ear.
