School of Medical Laboratory Science Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

The profile of a typical Beaumont MLS student is:

  • Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Medical Laboratory Science
  • Average overall GPA > 3.45 (Range: 2.85 - 3.95 based on 2015 applicant data)
  • Graduate from a Michigan university (e.g., Michigan State University; Michigan Technological University, Oakland University; University of Michigan-Flint; Madonna University)
  • Completion of all required academic courses, including laboratory component

Applicants enrolled in Medical Laboratory Science curriculums at a Michigan university and who meet the program prerequisites are considered first. Applicants from out of state institutions are considered for admission if a baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Science has been earned and all course requirements have been met.

Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) both overall and in all science/math prerequisite courses listed below.

Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a designated agency for course credit and grades, including GPA. (See Application Process page.)

Required Courses

Applicants must successfully complete the following college-level courses (a minimum of 16 semester hours biology and 16 semester hours chemistry) within the last five years:

  • 16 credit hours in Chemistry including Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • 16 credit hours in Biology including General Microbiology (with Bacteriology)
  • Clinical Chemistry including laboratory
  • Medical Microbiology including laboratory
  • Mycology and Parasitology (combined course acceptable)
  • Clinical Immunology
  • Clinical Hematology and Hemostasis including laboratory
  • Clinical Immunohematology including laboratory
  • Physiology
  • Mathematics (intermediate algebra or higher)
  • Statistics
  • Computer Applications (or demonstrated proficiency/equivalent)


  • Clinical Immunology, Clinical Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Hematology/Hemostasis courses must have been completed at a U.S. college or university.
  • Due to the rigorous, fast-paced nature of the program, NO exceptions can be allowed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions represent the essential non-academic requirement of the School of Medical Laboratory Science that students must master to successfully participate in the program. In general, students must be able to affirm their abilities of manual dexterity, vision, health, behavior, intellectual skills and communication. Acceptance into the School of Medical Laboratory Science program is dependent upon many factors, including the student's grades, letters of recommendation, statement of career goals, academic and work experiences, successful completion of a physical examination performed by the Beaumont Occupational Health Service, and assessment by the Admissions Committee of a candidate's potential ability to meet the above mentioned Essential Functions.

Upon admission to the program, students will be asked to affirm their ability to perform this specific list of functions either with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Pre-Orientation Clinical Competencies

In preparation for this experience, admitted students will receive a written assignment titled "Pre-Orientation Clinical Competencies" via email one month prior to the program orientation start date. These competencies will cover the theoretical knowledge and basic laboratory skill background that students are expected already possess from the required university course work.

More specifically, the competencies will consist of 30 - 50 questions from the following laboratory disciplines - Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology and Microbiology. Each student is required to write, type or draw the answers for all the provided questions. The assignment will be due to the program director the first day of program orientation. The clinical faculty will review them for completeness. Students will be expected to review and understand this information. They will be given a graded pre-test on the first day in these respective laboratory courses.

Physical Exam Upon Acceptance

Students accepted in to the program will be required to pass a physical examination through occupational health services before beginning the program. The examination includes, but is not limited to: general physical examination; chest x-ray; blood and urinalysis tests; tuberculosis (TB) testing; drug, alcohol and nicotine screening; evidence of immunity to rubella, mumps, varicella zoster, rubeola and pertussis.

In addition, students will be required to receive (or show proof) of Hepatitis B vaccine, influenza vaccine and Tdap vaccination. Accepted students who test positive for drugs, alcohol or nicotine will be declined their offered position in the program.

Special Notes to Non-Medical Laboratory Science Majors

  1. We do not accept requests for appointments to review transcripts from candidates with various Biology and Chemistry degrees. Please contact an academic advisor at one of the universities listed in Note #4 below for transcript review and guidance on meeting our program requirements. 
  2. Due to the fast-pace of our program, we can only accept applications from students who meet (or will meet within two semesters) the specific academic criteria stated above.
  3. Other hospital-based programs participating in the Medical Technology Internship Matching Program of Michigan (MTIMPM) have different admission requirements, so please check their webpages as well. 
  4. If you are not currently in a medical laboratory science program at a U.S. college/university and/or lack our required prerequisite courses, various metro-Detroit universities offer the required clinical laboratory science courses identified above. These include: Michigan State University-Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program; Oakland University-School of Health Sciences; Wayne State University-Clinical Laboratory Science Program; University of Michigan-Flint - School of Health Professions; and Eastern Michigan University - School of Health Sciences.
