A maximum of four students is accepted into the 47-week program.
During the first seven months, students will develop technical skills through lectures and laboratory assignments. Classes include: histotechnique and histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular pathology. Additional coursework includes classes in management, education methodology, microcomputers, research and technical writing. The last five months are spent in clinical rotations through the Histology, Electron Microscopy, Surgical Pathology, Immunology and Molecular Pathology laboratories, with staff supervision.
Student progress is evaluated throughout the program with exams and performance evaluations. Students must successfully complete each course to satisfy the requirements of the program.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the certification exam for Histotechnologists (HTL) administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification.
