PGY-1 Residency Program Overview

Residency Program Purpose

The ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Residency Program at Beaumont Hospital will foster the development of competent and confident pharmacists who are prepared to either enter into challenging practice environments or pursue PGY-2 residency training and be eligible for board certification. Residents will demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication use system. Lastly, residents will possess the knowledge and leadership skills to promote the advancement of the practice of pharmacy.

Overview of Program Requirements

The residency program is divided into one-month experiences, with the first month devoted to orientation to both the operational areas and clinical services.  Refer to the "Rotations" section for requird learning experiences.  PGY-1 Residents at Beaumont (Royal Oak) will be required to complete a number of longitudinal requirements. 

Longitudinal Requirements:

  • present at the Department's Tuesday / Thursday Education Conference and Pharmacy Grand Rounds
  • weekend staffing requirements (every third weekend)
  • holidays (1 major; 1 minor)
  • complete a research project, present results in poster format at ASHP Clinical Midyear Meeting and UHC regional residency conference and write the manuscript
  • complete a medication use evaluation
  • document all patient care interventions
  • provide a continuing education lecture to pharmacy staff
  • precept Doctor of Pharmacy students
  • complete article for publication or participate in the Wayne State University Teaching Certificate Program
  • participation in leadership curriculum

Travel

  • Residents will have all reasonable expenses reimbursed for the Ohio Pharmacy Residency Conference and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting.

Compensation

  • The anticipated salary for incoming residents in July 2017 is approximately $48,000/year.  

Time Off

  • Residents will accrue approximately 24 days of combined time off (CTO) throughout the year. A portion of this CTO will be used for attendance at professional meetings. Residents can take 2 weeks of vacation throughout the year however no more than 3 days per any one rotation can be taken. Vacation time requires prior approval and must be taken before June 15th. CTO time cannot be used for weekend staffing shifts.
