The PGY-1 Residency Program at Beaumont Hospital will foster the development of competent and confident pharmacists who are prepared to either enter into challenging practice environments or pursue PGY-2 residency training. As a member of the health care team, residents will be responsible for providing direct patient care to multiple populations. Residents will be accountable for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes. They will exercise skill in educating health care professionals, patients and the community on medication related topics. Residents will demonstrate professional maturity by following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication use system. Lastly, residents will possess the knowledge and leadership skills to promote the advancement of the practice of pharmacy.
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak offers a twelve month American Society of Health-System Pharmacists ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Residency for up to six residency candidates. The program starts July 1 and is completed on June 30 the following year.
Multiple teaching opportunities exist within the program including presentations to the pharmacy staff on 4 rotations, playing an active role in precepting PharmD students, option to select the academic rotation as an elective, presentation of a didactic lecture at Wayne State University if desired and optional participation in a Teaching Certificate program offered in conjunction with Wayne State University.
Our department also offers a 2-year non-traditional PGY-1 residency program (started 2013) to pharmacists who have been employed in our department for a minimum of 1 year.
PGY-1 Residents at Beaumont (Royal Oak) will be required to complete a number of longitudinal requirements.
