Qualifications for Supervisory Clinical Pastoral Education

The program of supervisory CPE is designed for directors of pastoral care departments and experienced professionals (i.e. board certified chaplains). CPE supervisors are specialists in supervising programs of clinical pastoral education. Our clinical, theological educator(s) meets the requirements for certification set forth in ACPE Standards, section 300. Candidates are responsible for demonstrating the personal skills and professional competence required by each standard. In addition, candidates must be acquainted with the history of clinical pastoral education, read the ACPE Bylaws, the ACPE Standards, and agree to abide by the ACPE Code of Professional Ethics.

The philosophy that outlines our supervisory training program is consistent with all aspects of our CPE activity. Clinical Pastoral Education at Beaumont Health System provides professional education for ministry in a diverse environment of spirituality, learning styles, vocational formation and culture, that is valued, affirmed and honored.

Admissions requirements and procedures for supervisory CPE at the Beaumont Health System CPE Center follow the ACPE Supervisory CPE applications and admission process and comply with ACPE Standards 400-402. These include:

  • A minimum of four units of CPE (two each at Level I and Level II) and demonstrated meeting of ACPE outcomes of Level II CPE (Standards 400 and 402.2)
  • Faith group endorsement/accountability
  • Graduation from college
  • Graduation from an accredited theological school with Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent. Equivalencies would need to be determined by the ACPE, Inc.
  • Membership in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, Inc. (Standard 402.1)
  • Ordination or commission to function in ministry of pastoral care by an appropriate religious authority. Applicants must submit proof of ordination, consecration or endorsement
  • Pastoral experience
  • Consultation with the Beaumont Health System Clinical Pastoral Education Interdisciplinary Consultation Committee (ICC)
  • Readiness consultation with the ACPE East Central Region certification committee
  • Submission of the required Supervisory CPE application form, paperwork, documentation, and references to the Beaumont Health System’s director of Clinical Pastoral Education, be interviewed by the Clinical Pastoral Education Center's Interdisciplinary Consultation Committee (ICC) admissions sub-committee, and work out a contract and plan with the Beaumont, Royal Oak CPE supervisor(s) for supervisory CPE, and participating membership in the sub-regional S-I-T (supervisors-in-training) group.
  • As part of the admissions process, applicants will be required to craft a tentative learning contract worked out in collaboration with the designated, consenting CPE supervisor.

Admission into the supervisory education program at Beaumont Health System’s CPE Center is also contingent upon:

  • Satisfactory criminal history search of both state and federal abuse and neglect registries and databases:
    • Health and Human Services (HHS)
    • Excluded Parties List System (EPLS)
    • Michigan’s International Criminal History Access Tool (MICHAT)
    • Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry (MI PSOR)
  • Completion of a pre-admission physical performed by Beaumont Health System’s Occupational Health Services that includes drug testing, immunizations, and TB test
  • Participation in Beaumont’s Health System orientation sessions as required by the department of Human Resources.

Intending applicants to supervisory CPE programs at the Beaumont Health System’s CPE Center should bear in mind that certification as an associate supervisor and CPE supervisor is governed by Standard 400 of the ACPE Certification Manual which stipulates:

Certification by ACPE is granted by the certification commission. The certification commission establishes procedures and guidelines, detailed in the ACPE certification manual, for granting and maintaining certification of CPE supervisors. The certification commission has the authority to take action on all certification matters, including: granting, denying, or continuing certification; defining and implementing procedures by which certification may be withdrawn; and determining the limits and conditions under which a person in training may practice supervision. All certification commission decisions are subject to the ACPE appeal process. Entry into the formal certification process requires successful completion of at least four units of CPE (Level I/Level II) and demonstration of having met CPE (Level I/Level II outcomes (see ACPE Certification Manual).

Applicants who meet the ACPE requirements for admission to supervisory CPE may request admission to supervisory CPE. If a position is available, the CPE Center supervisory staff will assess pastoral competence, clarity of pastoral identity, as well as learning and functioning potential of that applicant in the CPE environment. If the staff concurs with the student's request, the student and training supervisor will meet at an East Central Region Certification "Readiness" consultation committee. The meeting will involve consultation regarding the appropriateness and timing of the student's admission to Supervisory CPE, his or her learning issues and goals, and the educational program to be designed for this student.

The Supervisory Education Process 

Our process encourages the student's development toward independent functioning with pastoral, conceptual, and supervisory competence as defined in the ACPE Standards.

Students begin by assisting a supervisor with a group of students and gradually taking more responsibility for leadership and program development. Eventually the student will supervise the learning of students in CPE units independently with no direct intervention from the training supervisor, only receiving observation and feedback.

Throughout their supervisory experience, students carry a regular clinical assignment determined by their supervisory load. The timetable for progress through the process is fluid and conditional on the student's ability and demonstrated development through the ACPE certification process.
