World-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson Sr., M.D., is coming home to Detroit on April 11 to share his inspirational life story while raising funds for a local nonprofit community health center located in his old neighborhood.
Dr. Carson will share his story on Thursday, April 11 at 6 p.m. at the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 2080 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit.
Tickets are available online with a suggested donation of $50 each at . For more information, email or call 313-228-0290. Please be aware: tickets are going fast and only those with a ticket will be able to attend.
The event is co-sponsored by Beaumont Health System, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and several other major supporters of health care for uninsured children in Metro Detroit. Additional sponsorship opportunities are still available.
“It’s a special honor for us to host Dr. Carson because his life is a model of achievement which we can all aspire to emulate,” says Paul Propson, executive director, Covenant Community Care. “We are inspired by his story and hope that those attending this event, especially the young people in the audience, will be motivated to reach their full potential in life through his personal story.”
Dr. Carson had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single-parent home and being challenged by dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper and low self-esteem seemed to preclude the realization of that dream. But his mother, with only a third grade education, challenged her son to strive for excellence.
He persevered and today Ben Carson is a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the renowned Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the John Hopkins Children’s Center for more than 25 years. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush in 2008.
Dr. Carson is the author of five books including his memoir, “Gifted Hands,” which was made into an award-winning movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. He is a highly regarded motivational speaker who has addressed audiences ranging from school systems and civic groups to corporations and most recently the National Prayer Breakfast.
