Unlike many other programs, Beaumont's Family Medicine inpatient service is managed primarily by the residents under the supervision of the faculty rounder. Patients are admitted to the service not only from the Family Medicine Center population but also from the practices of several private internists and family physicians in the area. These patients include adult patients as well as pediatric and newborn patients. The residents maintain continuity by rounding on their panel of patients daily and discussing the case with the attending physician. In this way residents actively manage their patients and learn to think independently while still being supervised. The team typically consists of two PGY 1's, one PGY 2, and one PGY 3 who "runs the service". The faculty rounder is also available for morning report, teaching rounds and lectures. This approach emphasizes both practical and evidence-based management of common hospital problems. The residency is also fortunate to have excellent specialists in the hospital that are interested in teaching the residents and often provide lectures and teaching rounds of their own.
