Beaumont Children’s is a regional referral center for all complex pediatric neurosurgical cases. Because the hospital is within Beaumont, Royal Oak, a Level I trauma center, it is equipped to handle even the most critical cases. Critical pediatric neurosurgery patients are cared for in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and dedicated pediatric specialists in every discipline of medicine and surgery assist with their care around the clock.
A multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of head and spine tumors ensures coordination of care among specialists in all key areas, including hematologists/oncologists, radiation oncologists and neurosurgeons. Doctors from each of these areas meet on an ongoing basis to review cases and develop appropriate treatment plans for each patient.
Neurosurgeons work with surgical teams dedicated to handling pediatric surgeries. Our pediatric anesthesiologists are board-certified and experienced in working with the most delicate surgical cases.
Peripheral nerve surgery and reconstruction are unique to Beaumont Children’s Hospital. We are the only hospital in southeast Michigan performing peripheral nerve reconstruction for brachial plexus injury in infants and children. And Beaumont, Royal Oak, is one of only a few centers in the country where residents can learn these pediatric neurosurgeries.
Multidisciplinary care of pediatric aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations is also unique to Beaumont Children’s Hospital. Angiographic treatment of infants and children of all ages is also available through interventional neuroradiology.
The epilepsy program was expanded in 2008 to include inpatient video-monitoring, in addition to neuropsychological evaluation and seizure surgery.
