Because research is a core mission at Beaumont, the Surgical Learning Center was established in part to afford greater access to new discoveries, technology and treatments.
The Center allows researchers to test advanced surgical technology and medical devices in a secure, yet realistic environment. It offers physicians an arena to conduct research on medical devices and equipment, and to advance groundbreaking treatment protocols in the operating room.
The Surgical Learning Center is affiliated with the Beaumont Commercialization Center, which works with medical researchers and industry to develop and test medical devices.
In 2007, the SLC acquired several pieces of equipment that will be used in research to evaluate the dexterity of surgeons. This special equipment includes the Minnesota Dexterity test, the Purdue pegboard test, the O'Connor finger dexterity test and the O'Connor dexterity testing tweezers.
