Why are children and young people at greater risk of radiation?
There are two reasons. First, at earlier stages of development, cells are more sensitive to radiation. Second, the chance of developing a slow growing cancer is higher in pediatric patients exposed to radiation earlier in their life than in patients who are exposed later in their life.
Because of this, pediatric radiation safety protocols and fast scanners are available and may be used to reduce the radiation dose. For more information, visit The Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging's "Image Gently" Campaign.
