Beaumont has the largest department of Ophthalmology in Michigan with more than 100 board-certified ophthalmologists. Also, Beaumont has been a leading participant in national clinical trials for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, ocular melanoma, glaucoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and retinal vascular disease.

Beaumont ophthalmologists are locally and nationally recognized as leaders in their field. Among Beaumont's attending staff members are past presidents of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons; the American Society of Retinal Specialist (the largest international retinal society in the world); and the Retina Society (the oldest academic retinal society in the United States).

Beaumont ophthalmologists are also leaders in the educational programs of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  Our ophthalmologists serve on the editorial boards of major ophthalmology and visual science journals, and have authored significant textbooks on ocular surgery. 

In pediatric ophthalmology, Beaumont ophthalmologists have pioneered new techniques that have become the standard of care including lens-sparing vitrectomy and laser photo coagulation.
