Our Clinical Ethics Consultation Service offers patients, family members, physicians and other members of the health care team an opportunity to work together to help develop a plan of care that best serves the patient's needs within the framework of the hospital's values and policies. We are here to help you.
The Clinical Ethics Consultation Service addresses issues such as the patient's welfare versus the patient's right to make treatment decisions, extending the life of the patient versus ensuring comfort as the primary goal and honoring family requests to withhold information from the patient versus the patient's right to know.
A consult team, which typically includes a physician, nurse and chaplain with training/experience in clinical bioethics, will meet with the patient, patient's family (when appropriate) and the health care team in an effort to clarify any ethical conflicts. The recommendations of the consulting team are non-binding.
For more information or to request a consultation, ask your caregiver or a representative of spiritual care services.
