Audiology is the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders in people of all ages. Beaumont's Audiology Department provides comprehensive services that range from general hearing testing to specialized care not found at most other hospitals.
For example, Beaumont is one of a handful of hospitals that are state-designated pediatric diagnostic audiology sites certified to follow up on babies who show deficiencies in hearing screenings conducted at birth.
Our audiologists have experience working with children and adults who have special needs that make hearing testing and evaluation difficult, such as those who are cognitively impaired, have suffered closed head injury, and those with dementia.
Because of our location near the hospital, our staff is able to perform specialized in-patient care, such as monitoring cancer patients receiving medications that may cause hearing loss.
Hearing tests can be performed on infants, children and special needs populations under sedation or general anesthesia if necessary.
Audiology services are conveniently provided in the Neuroscience Center on the Royal Oak campus. Close, free parking is available in the North ramp, which is connected to the Medical Office Building.
Beaumont's audiology staff is made up of all masters- or doctorate-trained audiologists. No services are performed by technicians.
Because the Audiology Department is not a private clinic and does not sell hearing aids or devices, patients can be assured of getting an unbiased assessment of their hearing needs. In addition, the audiologists have sufficient time to perform tests completely. They conduct a detailed patient history to better understand the patient's condition and spend quite a bit of time counseling patients, to ensure patients understand test results and recommendations.
