Anesthesia Services

Beaumont Health System has one of the busiest anesthesiology departments in the country providing over 100,000 anesthetics each year. In order to give the highest quality care, we have developed a large team with over 75 anesthesiologists (M.D. and D.O), 200 certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) and a fully accredited ACGME program for 24 residents. In addition, the Beaumont Health System serves as the primary affiliate for the U.S. News and World Report ranked Oakland University Beaumont Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia.

The Department of Anesthesiology is an integral part of surgical services. For the vast majority of anesthetics, the Beaumont Health System utilizes the care team model to provide care to patients. The team is composed of an anesthesiologist and either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or anesthesiology resident. Beaumont's residency is highly competitive attracting medical school graduates from throughout the region.

All physicians in the Department of Anesthesiology are members of South Oakland Anesthesia Associates (SOAA), P.C. Since its establishment in 1967, SOAA has been the exclusive provider of anesthesia services for Beaumont Hospitals. All physicians in the department are Diplomats of the American Board of Anesthesiology. In addition, many of our members have subspecialty boards in Critical Care, Pain Medicine and Echocardiography.

The Department of Anesthesiology is constantly developing the talent of new recruits. A large number of our physicians have gone beyond residency and completed fellowships. We are very proud to say that we have highly specialized anesthesiologists trained at leading institutions in every currently recognized subspecialty in anesthesiology.

These include:

  • Cardiac Anesthesiology
  • Obstetrical Anesthesiology
  • Transesophageal Echocardiography
  • Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Acute and Chronic Pain Medicine
  • Neuroanesthesiology

We are aggressively working to streamline the process of pre-operative preparation for our patients. Soon, we will be launching a service that allows patients to submit information about their medical history and have their questions answered online. For their convenience, Beaumont's innovative pre-operative assessment makes a pre-surgery visit a rare instance.

In addition, we are introducing proactive protocols that have been shown to improve long term outcome to our surgical patients. For example, we are introducing beta blockade pre-operatively, even for patients who have never taken beta blockers, as patients in certain risk categories have seen tremendous benefits from this early therapy. Also, we have been introducing safety protocols to ensure that patients receive prophylactic antibiotics at the optimal time in the course of surgery.

Many of our existing services help our patients minimize post-operative pain. The Department of Anesthesiology participates in many clinical research activities and studies in areas of postoperative pain management, gynecologic surgeries, total joint replacement, coronary artery bypass grafts among others.
