The Interventional Radiology multidisciplinary team of cancer surgeons, internists, nurses and other medical specialists makes sure patients receive the best possible treatment. 

The Interventional Radiology program at Beaumont is leading the way in minimally invasive treatments for liver, lung and kidney cancer:

  • Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is the third hospital in the world to use a new microwave ablation system to treat liver cancer using microwave ablation.
  • Beaumont has achieved leadership in using selective internal radiation treatment for hepatic (liver-related) malignancies. This highly effective outpatient procedure has minimal side effects.
  • Beaumont was one of the first sites anywhere in the world, and the first in Michigan, to use Selective Internal Radiation Treatment for malignant hepatic tumors. Radioembolization is the selective delivery of a very high radiation dose to liver tumors – while maintaining a low radiation dose to the normal liver tissue. This outpatient procedure has very few side effects, and we’ve successfully performed more than 500 such procedures at Beaumont.
  • Not only was Beaumont the first in the state to perform radioembolization, we pioneered Michigan’s first modern chemoembolization procedure for liver malignancies, as well. Chemoembolization is similar, and as with radioembolization, angiographic guidance helps place a catheter into the artery leading to the tumor. Particles lodge in the tumor’s small arteries and slowly release chemotherapy while shutting off the tumor blood supply. This is also an outpatient procedure at Beaumont, and patients experience few side effects.
  • Our physicians are leaders in innovative techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatic, lung and renal malignancies using percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA). In this procedure, a needle passes through a small incision into a tumor using imaging guidance. Radio frequency electricity passes through the needle into the tumor, killing the tumor without harming surrounding tissue.

These minimally invasive procedures have been found to bring better results for patients, with fewer side effects. They also help preserve quality of life for patients during treatment.
