Medical Laboratory Science Description

The School of Medical Laboratory Science was established in 1966 and has graduated more than 350 students. The goal of the School of Medical Laboratory Science is to provide instruction in the application of theory and ethical practice of clinical laboratory science.

The School is supported by the Beaumont Laboratory, Clinical Pathology laboratories located on the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan campus. The Clinical Pathology department is comprised of several laboratory sections: Automated Chemistry/Immunology, Special Testing (Manual Chemistry/Immunology, Toxicology,and Trace Metals), Transfusion Medicine, Hematology and Hemostasis, Microbiology, Molecular Probe, Analytical Cytometry and Virology. The staff consists of board-certified pathologists, physicians, Ph.D.s, certified medical laboratory scientists, phlebotomists and assistants.

Medical Laboratory Science students have opportunities to work with and practice on state-of-the-art instrumentatin and clinical materials. Students frequently participate in unique and advanced learning situations including professional seminars, problem solving, case studies and special projects.

The School of Medical Laboratory Science currently accepts up to twelve (12) students a year. The program structure has recently been re-designed to a 6.5 month program that includes 6 students in a Summer session and 6 students in a Winter session. Students will spend 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, in the clinical laboratory receiving demonstration, observation, hands-on practice, and lectures at the bench.
