A laryngectomy is a surgical procedure in which the vocal cords or larynx are removed from a person's throat. Because vibrations and movements of the vocal cords produce sound, the voice is lost. Individuals must learn a new way of speaking following the surgery. This includes using an electronic artificial larynx device or learning to produce esophageal speech, having a TEP (trachea-esophageal puncture).
Information, education and literature are offered to provide the best options for individuals. Experienced clinicians work with physicians for the most appropriate treatment for an individual.
