Each year, the Children’s Miracle Achievement Award honors only one caregiver, team or program, from its 170 member hospitals, that is significantly elevating the care of children and has been supported by funds from Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
"Beyond his stature as a most accomplished and respected senior pediatric oncologist, Dr Main is among the most compassionate and humane physicians I have ever known,” says Brian Berman, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief, Beaumont Children's Hospital. “His commitment to his patients and their families is nothing short of inspirational.”
In accepting the award, Dr. Main thanked the Beaumont Children’s Hospital staff and CMN volunteers who have helped him care for children at Beaumont for 25 years.
“I especially thanked the children and parents who were treated in the past when the survival rate was only 2 percent,” says Dr. Main. “Because of their trust, and because of their participation in cooperative group treatment trials, the cure rate for childhood acute leukemia is now close to 90 percent. This is an incredible improvement in less than 50 years.”
Beaumont Children’s Hospital is part of the Children’s Oncology Group. COG provides key information to advance the treatment of childhood cancer and support of the families from the time of diagnosis through treatment and following cure.
“Through COG, more than 220 respected hospitals in the country work together and learn very quickly what particular treatments work and what short or long-term toxicity is associated with the treatment,” says Dr. Main. “We are keeping company with organizations like the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude in this effort.”
“Cancer took away the dreams of these children. Our staff and volunteers, supported by CMN efforts, are trying to give their dreams back,” explains Dr. Main.
Dr. Main established the Charles Main Pediatric Cancer Survivor Scholarship Fund as a catalyst for patients to look to the future. The scholarship fund provides young adult cancer survivors with the opportunity to continue their education with help for college tuition. Currently, 43 former patients are seeking higher education in medicine, nursing, education, social work and law. Throughout the years, Dr. Main has helped raise $1 million to benefit Children’s Miracle Network and the scholarship fund especially through his annual CMN event, Stars Guitars. As a result, 160 survivors of childhood cancers have had encouragement and assistance with their education. Dr. Main also created the Pediatric Oncology Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic at Beaumont Children’s Hospital for ongoing monitoring of late effects of childhood cancer and its treatment.
“Dr. Main has given years of service to the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program at Beaumont. His skill and compassion have transformed the lives of thousands of children and their families,” says Margaret Cooney Casey, president of the Beaumont Foundation.
